Frequently Asked Questions

Blockchain Basics

What is blockchain?

Blockchain is a revolutionary technology that creates a permanent, transparent, and decentralized way to store and share information. Think of it as a digital ledger that records transactions and data in a way that cannot be altered, deleted, or censored once it's written.

How does blockchain work?

Blockchain works by creating a chain of data blocks, where each block contains information and is linked to the previous block. This creates an unbreakable chain that makes it virtually impossible to alter historical data. The network is maintained by thousands of computers worldwide, ensuring no single entity can control it.

Why is blockchain considered "immutable"?

Blockchain is immutable because once data is written to it, it becomes part of a permanent record that cannot be changed. This is achieved through cryptographic hashing and the distributed nature of the network, making it extremely secure and tamper-proof.

MultiversX Blockchain

Why did you choose MultiversX?

MultiversX was chosen for its advanced technology, including adaptive state sharding for scalability, secure proof of stake for energy efficiency, and its ability to handle thousands of transactions per second while maintaining security and decentralization.

What makes MultiversX different from other blockchains?

MultiversX stands out with its unique adaptive state sharding technology, which allows it to scale horizontally by splitting the network into smaller, manageable pieces. It also offers extremely low transaction fees and fast confirmation times, making it ideal for applications like Thoughts dApp.

Is MultiversX secure?

Yes, MultiversX uses a secure proof of stake consensus mechanism that has been thoroughly tested and audited. The network has never been compromised and maintains high security standards through cryptographic algorithms and distributed validation.

What is EGLD?

EGLD (eGold) is the native cryptocurrency of the MultiversX blockchain. It's designed to be the fundamental token for all network operations, including securing the network, powering smart contracts, and enabling governance. EGLD has a limited supply with a maximum of 31.4 million tokens that will ever exist, making it extremely scarce - there's only about 1 EGLD for every 253 people on Earth. This scarcity, combined with its utility in staking (earning ~6.5% APR), network security, and governance, makes EGLD a valuable digital asset. You can learn more about EGLD on the official MultiversX website.

Where can I learn more about MultiversX and its technology?

You can learn more about MultiversX and its technology by visiting the official MultiversX website or exploring their technical documentation, and joining their community channels. The platform offers comprehensive resources for developers and users interested in understanding the blockchain's architecture, features, and capabilities.

Thoughts dApp Smart Contract

What smart contract does Thoughts dApp use?

Thoughts dApp operates on the MultiversX blockchain using our verified smart contract. This contract is responsible for storing all thoughts, managing submissions, and handling interactions on the blockchain.

Contract Address: erd1qqqqqqqqqqqqqpgqv2q3d67qvp6l37crn2j9ulxwwfukn60y2cmsg34nuu

Contract Owner: @thoughts

How can I verify the smart contract?

You can verify our smart contract on the MultiversX blockchain explorer by searching for the contract address above or by visiting the contract page directly. The contract is open-source and verifiable, ensuring transparency and trust in our platform.

What happens to my thoughts on the blockchain?

When you submit a thought, it gets permanently recorded on the MultiversX blockchain through our smart contract. This means your thought becomes part of an immutable, decentralized record that cannot be altered or deleted by anyone, including us.

Getting Started

Do I need a wallet to use Thoughts dApp?

No, you don't need a wallet to use Thoughts dApp. We offer a submission service that allows you to post thoughts to the blockchain for a small fee. However, having your own wallet makes it cheaper and easier to post thoughts, gives you more control (e.g., you may boost your thoughts and/or add comments), and allows you to receive donations if your thoughts get popular.

What wallets are supported?

We support xPortal (mobile wallet), Web Wallet, hardware wallets like Ledger, and other wallets that are compatible with the MultiversX network. Each wallet offers different features and security levels.

How do I create a MultiversX wallet?

You can create a wallet by downloading xPortal from your app store, visiting the MultiversX Web Wallet, or using a hardware wallet (e.g., Ledger). Each method for setting up a MultiversX wallet has its own process: xPortal offers a quick setup in minutes with options like Google Sign-In via xAlias, which creates your wallet without requiring you to manually generate a seed phrase at the time of setup - very convenient for beginners; the Web Wallet involves generating a 24-word seed phrase that you must securely store yourself (offline on paper, etc.); and hardware wallets like Ledger require you to generate a seed phrase directly on the device during setup for enhanced protection against online threats, then back it up manually. All the processes are quite easy to follow. For more information, you may refer to the MultiversX documentation: Wallets Overview.

How do I add funds to my wallet?

There are several ways to add EGLD (the native token of MultiversX) to your wallet: You can buy EGLD directly through xPortal or MultiversX Web Wallet Buy using credit/debit cards or Apple Pay, purchase from centralized exchanges like Binance, Coinbase, or Crypto.com and transfer to your wallet, or use decentralized exchanges (DEXs) to swap other cryptocurrencies for EGLD. The minimum amount needed for a thought submission (submission fee + gas fees) is typically around 0.001-0.003 EGLD.

I want to use a centralized exchange. Can you recommend any?

The best exchange for you depends on your country and specific needs. Some popular options include Binance, KuCoin, Kraken, and Crypto.com. We can recommend Crypto.com (used by over 150 million users worldwide) as their withdrawal fees for EGLD are very small. It's also easy to setup and fund the account (e.g., in Canada, you can fund it via Interac eTransfer, making it very convenient for beginners).

Submitting Thoughts

How do I submit a thought?

You can submit a thought in two ways: 1) Connect your wallet and submit directly to the blockchain, or 2) Use our no-wallet submission service. Both methods will permanently store your thought on the blockchain.

What is the character limit for thoughts?

Each thought is limited to 512 characters. This limitation is to ensure efficient storage and processing on the blockchain while still allowing for meaningful content.

How much does it cost to submit a thought?

If you use your own wallet, the cost is 0.001 EGLD + gas fees. Blockchain gas fees depend on the length of the thought and other factors, but are typically very low (0.001-0.002 EGLD). The total cost of a thought submission (fee + gas) is usually under 0.003 EGLD, which based on the current EGLD price is just a few cents!

If you prefer to use our no-wallet submission service, the cost is $5 USD, which covers the blockchain fees and our service costs.

How long will it take for my thought to appear on the blockchain?

When you use your own wallet, your thought will appear immediately (typically within a few seconds) after submission. The MultiversX blockchain processes transactions very quickly, so you'll see your thought on the blockchain almost instantly.

In the case of our no-wallet submission service, your thought will be submitted manually by us after your payment is processed. This typically takes up to 24 hours for us to process and submit your thought to the blockchain.

Can I edit or delete my thoughts?

No, once a thought is posted to the blockchain, it cannot be modified or deleted. This is a fundamental characteristic of blockchain technology that ensures permanence and prevents censorship.

I need to post a thought longer than 512 characters. Is there any way to do it?

While thoughts are limited to 512 characters, you can add comments to your thought to provide additional context, explanations, or details. Comments also have a 512-character limit, but you can add multiple comments to expand on your original thought. This approach allows you to share longer content while maintaining the blockchain's efficiency requirements.

Can I add links to the text of my posts?

Yes, you can add links in your thoughts and comments. You can include URLs to external resources, articles, or websites that support your expressed idea or statement. Just paste the full URL (including http:// or https://) and it will be displayed on the frontend as a clickable link for other users to access. The link will also show up in the text of your thought on the blockchain but will not be clickable.

Viewing Thoughts

Where can I see my submitted thought?

Your submitted thought will be visible in two main places: on this website's frontend (where thoughts are loaded from the blockchain) and on the MultiversX blockchain explorer. The thought becomes part of the permanent, immutable record on the blockchain and is immediately accessible through our platform.

Where is my thought visible on the website?

Upon submission, your thought will appear in several locations across the platform:

  • Under "Recent Thoughts" on the main page
  • In the "Recent Thoughts" section of the Explore page
  • Within its assigned category page
  • On its dedicated SEO-friendly page (accessible via the thought's title)
  • If it's a boosted thought, it will also appear in the boosted thoughts section across all major pages (home, explore, and category pages), with its position determined by the total boost amount in competition with other boosted thoughts

Your thought is also searchable by the author's account number and other criteria, making it easy to locate specific submissions.

How can I see my thought on the blockchain?

There are several ways to view your thought on the MultiversX blockchain:

  • Visit the MultiversX Explorer: Go to the MultiversX blockchain explorer and search by your account number or herotag to see your transaction (operation type: SubmitThought)
  • Check the Contract Page: Visit our smart contract page and look for your submission among the transactions
  • Search by Transaction Hash: Each thought has a unique transaction hash number that you can copy from the thought card or thought page. Use this hash to search directly on the MultiversX explorer

The hash number is displayed on both the thought card and the dedicated thought page, and each thought on the frontend is linked to its corresponding blockchain listing.

How do I see the text of my thought on the blockchain?

When viewing your thought's transaction on the MultiversX explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the transaction page for your thought submission
  2. Scroll down to the "Input Data" field
  3. Look for a dropdown menu that shows different data formats
  4. If "Text" format is not already selected, click the dropdown and select "Text"
  5. You'll see your thought in the following format: submitThought@Test of your thought@Category. No-wallet submissions will also list @Author at the end.

If the Input Data field shows a different format (like "Raw"), simply select "Text" from the dropdown to view your thought in readable text format.

Content and Moderation

What content is allowed?

We encourage thoughtful, respectful content that contributes to meaningful discussions. While we cannot prevent content from being posted to the blockchain, we may filter inappropriate content from our frontend display.

What happens to inappropriate content?

Inappropriate content may be filtered from display on our website, but it remains permanently accessible on the blockchain. This is because blockchain technology makes content immutable once posted.

How do I report concerning content?

You can report concerning content through our reporting features when available. Even though we are very limited in what we can do due to an immutable nature of blockchain technology, we may apply frontend filtering to hide the concerning post from public view on the website.

Donations and Boosting

How do donations work?

Users can donate to thoughts they find valuable. For wallet-created thoughts, 95% goes directly to the author's wallet, while 5% is retained for platform development. For purchased submissions, donations support platform development.

What is boosting?

Boosting increases a thought's visibility and prominence within the platform. Higher total boost amounts result in increased visibility in the boosted thoughts section. All boost transactions are permanently recorded on the blockchain.

How much should I boost?

Boost amounts are discretionary, with a minimum of 0.001 EGLD. You can boost any amount you feel is appropriate to support thoughts you find valuable.

Technical Questions

What happens if the website goes down?

If our website goes down, all thoughts remain safely stored on the MultiversX blockchain. You can still access your content through blockchain explorers or other MultiversX tools. The blockchain operates independently of our website.

How fast are transactions processed?

MultiversX typically processes transactions in 6 seconds or less. However, during high network activity, it may take slightly longer. All transactions are confirmed when they appear on the blockchain.

What if I lose my wallet?

If you lose your wallet, you can recover it using your seed phrase (12 or 24 words). This is why it's crucial to write down and securely store your seed phrase. Without it, you cannot recover your wallet or access your funds.

Privacy and Security

Is my content private?

No, all content posted to the blockchain is publicly visible. This is a fundamental characteristic of blockchain technology that ensures transparency and prevents censorship. Consider this carefully before posting personal or sensitive information.

Can people see my wallet address?

Yes, your wallet address is visible on the blockchain when you interact with the dApp. However, wallet addresses are pseudonymous and don't directly reveal your identity unless you choose to share personal information.

How do I protect my privacy?

To protect your privacy, avoid sharing personal information in your thoughts, consider using a separate wallet for the dApp, and be mindful that all content becomes permanently public on the blockchain.

Troubleshooting

My transaction failed. What should I do?

Failed transactions usually occur due to insufficient funds, network congestion, or wallet issues. Check that you have enough EGLD for the transaction fee, wait a few minutes and try again, or restart your wallet application.

I can't connect my wallet. What's wrong?

Common issues include wallet not being unlocked, browser compatibility problems, or network connectivity issues. Try refreshing the page, ensuring your wallet is unlocked, or switching to a different browser.

How do I know if my thought was posted successfully?

You'll see a confirmation message on the website, and you can verify the transaction on the MultiversX blockchain explorer using your wallet address or transaction hash. The thought should appear in your profile and the main feed.
